thoughts about Matthew 15

Yesterday in Church one of the readings was the story about the Canaanite Woman found in Matthew 15 where a Canaanite Woman pleads with Jesus to heal her daughter. Jesus tells her that he was sent for the Jews and tells her it would not be right to give the children’s food to dogs ! She replies that even dogs are allowed to eat crumbs from the floor. Jesus is impressed with her faith and heals the daughter.

From the reading and the ensuing sermon I understood that we must be persistent in our faith but I was thinking that Jesus was being downright rude ! Of course I couldn’t leave it at that so this morning I did a search and found some articles to read… (more…)

image of the invisible God…

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16for in* him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. 17He himself is before all things, and in* him all things hold together.

Thanks to Caryn who sent me a really cool article about the Tree of Life. Here is a brief portion of the email along with some related linkage.

A couple of days ago I was running (I use that term very loosely) on my treadmill, watching a DVD sermon by Louie Giglio…and I was BLOWN AWAY! I want to share what I learned….but I fear not being able to convey it as well as I want. I will share anyway.

He (Louie) was talking about how inconceivably BIG our God is…how He spoke the universe into being…how He breathes stars out of His mouth that are huge raging balls of fire…etc. etc. Then He went on to speak of how this star-breathing, universe creating God ALSO knitted our human bodies together with amazing detail and wonder. At this point I am LOVING it (fascinating from a medical standpoint, you know.) …and I was remembering how I was constantly amazed during medical school as I learned more and more about God’s handiwork. I remember so many times thinking…’How can ANYONE deny that a Creator did all of this???’

Louie went on to talk about how we can trust that the God who created all this, also has the power to hold it all together when things seem to be falling apart…how our loving Creator is also our sustainer.

It’s interesting to note that the image of the molecule looks a lot like the Kabbalistic Tree of Life.

the rich fool…

Filed under: Christ, Christian, Religion, thoughts — Tags: , , , , , , — dionysius @ 12:30 pm

Reading a post in Nancy’s blog this morning caused me to think about the Parable of the Rich Fool. This story that Jesus told is a dramatic illustration of the futility of devoting one’s life to the accumulation of wealth. So many people dissipate all their time and energy trying to get richer and richer and in the end have nothing to show for it.

This parable is also a good expression of my Eschatology. No one really knows when Christ will return or the world will end; nor do they really know the details of what will happen when it does happen. Of course many people have all sorts of elaborate theories about eschatology and the End Times. I believe that Christ will come again as promised but I do not attempt to figure out the details; but for practical purposes I believe that the “end” for each person is when they die. That is when they will meet up with God. No one knows when they will die, so we all should be prepared to meet God anytime and all the time. We should use our time and energy to love God and other people rather than trying to accumulate more and more stuff.

Christian Karma ???

Filed under: Christ, Christian, Religion, notes, thoughts — Tags: — dionysius @ 12:36 pm

First a disclaimer: I’m not a theologian or Clergy so these are just my own random thoughts inspired by some reading I did earlier this morning.

Usually one doesn’t associate the idea of Karma with Christianity. A simple way of stating the idea of Karma is “what goes around comes around”. This works as a more or less endless cycle. Of course this is an over simplification.

Christianity on the other hand is a religion of grace and forgiveness. But there are similar concepts in Christianity. I think a good way to put it would be that Jesus Christ by his death on the cross took upon himself all the karma that ever was and by his resurrection defeated it.

wednesday morning…

Filed under: Christ, Religion, at work, blogs|blogging, notes — Tags: — dionysius @ 9:44 am

Actually feels more like a monday but it’s wednesday. I got into my office this morning at 6:00 and went through my email & fixed & printed a spreadsheet. Then I did some push-ups and a full down / up circuit of the stairs in the building. Back to my desk, I read Psalm 2 which had a footnote for Hebrews 1, which is a very cool chapter I think. I will let the passages stand without comment except to say both are good.

In my email this morning was an invite to journalspace.net a new service using wordpress from the same folks that have journalspace.com. I have a journalspace.com blog but don’t use it anymore. I also note that a lot of people have problems with it. I thought I might try the new .net service and tried to sign up, but was not able to do so !

I have a wordpress.com blog and I know of at least one other service using wordpress; blogsome.com. I’m curious how many other sites out there use WP.
