Joe Paterno had to go: a religious argument – The Washington Post | I agree with the Rabbi here; Joe Paterno did have a moral obligation to follow through. Actually the person who witnessed the incident should have intervened or called police immediately. In defense of both Paterno and the actual witness; I think sometimes when people encounter something as shocking as this they become immobilized and are unable to act. But that itself is a deficiency we must guard against and overcome….

The temptation to respond by emulating them is an insidious delayed reaction that in some ways is worse than the intial mayhem of the terrorist act…
When I heard the Norwegian Prime Minister Stoltenberg respond to the attacks by saying “You will not destroy us, you will not destroy our democracy and our idea for a better world,” I felt a great sense of relief and some pride in being a progressive-liberal European. If the ultimate goal of right-wing extremists is to undermine our core values and try to force our hand by giving up the tolerant and open societies we have built in Europe, we cannot let them win. http://goo.gl/wNls1 Article about an American soldier doing consecutive life terms in prison for killing an entire Iraqi family after raping the daughters. Such a waste 4 people killed, 1 in prison for life. All of these people had friends and loved ones; their lives are profoundly altered. I’m sure the consequences don’t stop there either. Lord have mercy…

The Other Religion at Ground Zero – Newsweek – They ought to let these guys rebuild; they were there way before the WTC was even thought of. I don’t have a problem with the Mosque either but I would advise against it because of the intense opposition; if they did build it I suspect the place would still be the object of protests 50 years from now….

Here’ some good news for “boomers”. We are semi-immune to H1N1 flu….
People born before 1957 were exposed to ancestors of the new pandemic virus, which are in a lineage that goes back to the notorious H1N1 virus that touched off the raging pandemic of 1918-19. That’s why people older than 52 are likely to have some protective antibodies that “cross-react” with the new H1N1 flu….

Polanski indicated Monday that he will fight extradition to California from Switzerland, where his capture on a 31-year-old fugitive warrant for child rape has prompted an international political and legal struggle. – my opinion is that if he has been staying out of trouble for 31 years there is no good reason to go after him now…..

I’m all for the advancement of technology and increasing human knowledge but I think our efforts and resources could be better used right here on Earth. I really don’t see any pressing necessity to spend enormous amounts of money to send a few people to Mars.

Smitty sent me this fable illustrating why the American auto industry is in deep trouble while the Japanese car makers are faring so much better. The premise of the story, top heavy management, seems entirely reasonable to me; although I have no idea whether or not the statistics cited at the end are true or not.
A Japanese company ( Toyota ) and an American company (GM) decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race. (More …)
